About Castell Coch
A storybook Victorian castle of three conical-roofed towers above the woods north of Cardiff, built by William Burges for the Marquess of Bute on a ruined medieval fortress, with fantastical painted interiors.
Castell Coch (Welsh for 'Red Castle', after its red sandstone) stands on a wooded hillside north of Cardiff. A medieval stone castle was built here around 1267–1277 by the Norman lord Gilbert de Clare, on an earlier fortification; it was probably destroyed by Welsh rebels in 1314 and left ruined for centuries. From 1875 the 3rd Marquess of Bute had the architect William Burges rebuild it as a Gothic Revival country retreat.
Burges rebuilt the exterior in 1875–1879, giving its three circular towers steep conical roofs modelled on continental castles; its lavish interiors were completed to his designs in 1891, a decade after his death. The family made little use of the retreat. The Marquess replanted a commercial vineyard on the slope below in 1875, which made wine until the First World War. Castell Coch passed to the state in 1950 and is cared for by Cadw.
Did you know? Castell Coch is a Victorian fantasy raised on a genuine medieval ruin. William Burges rebuilt the towers with steep conical roofs copied from French and German castles, not from anything native to Wales.
