About Caernarfon Castle

Edward I's most imperial Welsh fortress by the Menai Strait, with banded walls and polygonal, eagle-topped towers echoing Rome, and the stage for the modern investitures of the Prince of Wales.

Caernarfon Castle was begun in 1283 for Edward I of England, on the site of an earlier Norman castle, as the royal and administrative centre of his newly conquered principality of north Wales. It forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd' (inscribed 1986). Unlike Edward's other castles, it was built with banded masonry and angular polygonal towers, which scholars have interpreted as a deliberate echo of the walls of Constantinople and Roman imperial power, though the point is debated.

Its grandest tower, the Eagle Tower, was once crowned with carved stone eagles. By tradition the future Edward II was born here in 1284 and later made the first English Prince of Wales; the castle staged the investitures of the future Edward VIII in 1911 and of Charles, later King Charles III, on 1 July 1969. The famous tale that Edward I promised the Welsh a prince who spoke no English is apocryphal, traceable only to the 16th century. It is cared for by Cadw.

Did you know? Caernarfon was built to look imperial: its banded stone walls and polygonal, eagle-topped towers are thought to echo the walls of Constantinople and the power of Rome, dressing a conquest in borrowed glory.
