About Musée des Explorations du Monde (Musée de la Castre)

The museum in the medieval castle of the Lérins monks atop Le Suquet, holding world art and antiquities, with a square watchtower whose viewpoint takes in the whole Bay of Cannes.

The museum on the summit of Le Suquet occupies the remains of the medieval castle built by the monks of Lérins, around the place de la Castre. Long known as the Musée de la Castre, it was officially renamed the Musée des Explorations du Monde in 2021, though the castle and square still carry the old name, from the Latin castrum. The city installed its museum here in 1919, growing from an 1877 gift by the Dutch traveller baron Lycklama.

Its collections span the world: antiquities of the Mediterranean, art and objects from the Himalayas and Tibet, the Arctic, pre-Columbian America and Oceania, and a gallery of musical instruments displayed in the old Sainte-Anne chapel. In the courtyard rises the square watchtower, about 22 metres high; a climb of around a hundred steps is rewarded with a panorama over the roofs of the old town, the harbour and the whole Bay of Cannes. The tower, chapel and nearby church are protected together as historic monuments.

Did you know? Long known as the Musée de la Castre, the museum was officially renamed the Musée des Explorations du Monde in 2021; it fills the medieval castle the monks of Lérins built on Le Suquet.
