About Île Saint-Honorat

The smaller Lérins island, home to a working Cistercian monastery founded around AD 410, a fortified sea-tower monastery, and vineyards where the monks make their own wine.

Île Saint-Honorat is the smaller of the two Lérins islands, lying just south of Sainte-Marguerite, and for some sixteen centuries it has been a place of monks. A monastery was founded here by Honoratus, later bishop of Arles, around AD 410, and it grew into one of the great religious centres of the early Christian West, training many bishops. On the island's south shore stands the fortified monastery, a tower-refuge begun around 1073 against sea raids, with two superimposed cloisters added in the 15th century.

The community was dispersed more than once over the centuries and all but died out, until in 1869 Cistercian monks resettled the island, where they remain today, numbering about twenty-one. They live in the 19th-century abbey, closed to visitors apart from retreats, and farm roughly eight hectares of vines, making wine and the Lérina liqueurs. The island is a working monastic site, visited quietly and respectfully, with seven old chapels scattered among its pines.
