About Cișmigiu Gardens
The oldest and best-loved public park in central Bucharest, opened in 1847 around a lake, with romantic alleys, rowing boats, a rotunda of writers' busts and winter ice-skating.
Cișmigiu Gardens, the oldest public park in central Bucharest, opened in 1847 around a lake, on the site of an old fishing pool. It was laid out by a German landscape gardener, Carl Meyer, who gave it winding alleys, imported trees and a romantic landscape of rock and water. Its curious name comes from the Turkish word for the official who looked after the city's public fountains, who once lived on the grounds.
At 14.6 hectares it is a beloved green refuge in the heart of the city: a lake for rowing boats, stone bridges, weeping willows, and a lakeside terrace. A circular alley, the Rondul Român, is lined with busts of a dozen great Romanian writers, and there are monuments to French and American war dead. In winter the lake becomes a skating rink, and in every season Bucharesters come here to walk, sit and escape the traffic.
