About Old Town (Lipscani)
The old merchants' quarter around Lipscani street, named after traders from Leipzig, once lined with guild workshops and now a lively pedestrian maze of cobbled lanes, cafés, old inns and nightlife.
Lipscani, the heart of Bucharest's Old Town, was from the Middle Ages the city's great trading quarter. Its main street takes its name from Leipzig, in Romanian 'Lipsca', because so many of its wares came from there; a 'lipscan' was a merchant who dealt in Western European goods. Streets nearby still carry the names of the guilds that worked them: Furriers, Saddlers, Smiths.
The quarter grew around the Old Princely Court and was long neglected under communism, when it narrowly escaped demolition. Restored since the 2000s into a cobbled pedestrian zone, it is now the most visited part of the city, full of cafés, bars and restaurants. Among its landmarks are Hanul lui Manuc, an inn of 1808 built around a great galleried courtyard, and the ornate Gothic-Revival beer hall Caru' cu bere.
