About Tiergarten
Berlin's vast central park, 200 hectares of former royal hunting grounds transformed into a public green lung, home to the Victory Column, beer gardens, and the Soviet War Memorial.
The Tiergarten, literally 'Animal Garden', is the largest urban park in Berlin, stretching 200 hectares from the Brandenburg Gate in the east to Charlottenburg in the west. It was originally the Hohenzollern royal hunting forest, stocked with game for the court's pleasure. In the 18th century, Frederick the Great had the forest redesigned as a formal garden and opened it to the public; in the 19th century, landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné redesigned it in the more naturalistic English landscape style. Allied bombing and the desperate Cold War winters left the park essentially stripped of trees by 1945, Berliners cut down almost every tree for firewood. A massive replanting effort after the war restored the park. Today it is home to the Victory Column, the Soviet War Memorial, summer beer gardens, jogging paths, and is the peaceful green heart of central Berlin.
Did you know? By 1947, desperate Berliners had cut down almost every tree in the Tiergarten for firewood, the park was entirely replanted from scratch over the following decade.
