About Topography of Terror

A free outdoor and indoor exhibition on the site of the former Gestapo and SS headquarters, documenting the mechanisms of Nazi terror alongside a preserved section of the Berlin Wall.

The Topography of Terror stands on one of the most sinister addresses in European history: the Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse complex that served as the headquarters of the Gestapo (Secret State Police), the SS, and the Reich Security Main Office, the institutions that planned and carried out the Holocaust and other crimes of the Nazi state. The buildings were destroyed by Allied bombs in 1945, and the ruins were excavated by historians and archaeologists in the 1980s. The documentation centre, opened in its current form in 2010, presents a comprehensive exhibition on the rise of the SS and Gestapo, their methods of surveillance and persecution, and the systematic murder programmes they administered. The outdoor exhibition runs along the excavated cellars of the former Gestapo prison, adjacent to one of the longest surviving stretches of the Berlin Wall. Admission is free.

Did you know? The site was the headquarters of the Gestapo, SS, and Reich Security Main Office, the three institutions that together planned and administered the Holocaust and other Nazi crimes.
