About KaDeWe

Kaufhaus des Westens, Europe's largest department store, opened 1907, legendary for its seventh-floor gourmet food hall with over 34,000 food and drink products and panoramic views.

KaDeWe, Kaufhaus des Westens ('Department Store of the West'), is Europe's largest department store and one of the great retail institutions of the world. Opened in 1907 by Adolf Jandorf on Tauentzienstrasse just off the Ku'damm, the store was designed as a democratic luxury emporium where all Berliners could encounter and aspire to the finest goods available. KaDeWe suffered serious bomb damage in 1943 and was nearly destroyed again in 1996 when a light aircraft crashed into the roof. Both times it was rebuilt and expanded. During the Cold War it was a living symbol of Western consumer abundance, attracting East Germans who crossed during rare opportunities with wide eyes and often limited hard currency. The store's legendary seventh floor, the Feinschmeckeretage (Gourmet Floor), occupies the entire upper floor and roof terrace and stocks over 34,000 food and drink products from around the world, with live cooking stations, oyster bars, and a panoramic view of West Berlin.

Did you know? During the Cold War, East Germans who managed to visit West Berlin would make straight for KaDeWe, its legendary food hall, offering goods completely unavailable in the GDR, was a political statement in retail form.
