About Knez Mihailova Street

The grand pedestrian promenade of central Belgrade, a kilometre of nineteenth-century facades, shops and cafes following the line of an old Roman road from the main square to the fortress.

Knez Mihailova Street is the main pedestrian promenade and shopping street of central Belgrade, running about a kilometre from Republic Square to the gates of the fortress. It is named for Prince Mihailo Obrenović, and it follows the line of a main Roman road to the old legionary fort; Roman graves and baths have been found beneath it. A protected cultural monument, it was laid out as a proper street in the 1860s.

Lined with elegant nineteenth- and early twentieth-century buildings, among them the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and some of the oldest houses in the old town, it became a pedestrian zone in 1987, paved in black granite and shaded by oak trees. Today it is the city's busy heart of shops, cafes and street musicians, and the natural route up to Kalemegdan.
