About Zemun and the Gardoš Tower
The old Austro-Hungarian town across the Sava, where red-roofed streets climb Gardoš hill to an 1896 tower with sweeping Danube views, above a riverside quay of fish restaurants.
Zemun was a separate town until it was absorbed into Belgrade in 1934, and it still feels distinct: a charming old Central-European quarter on the Danube, once the frontier post of Austria-Hungary facing Ottoman Belgrade across the river. Its narrow, red-roofed streets climb Gardoš hill, crowned by the remains of a medieval fortress.
On the hilltop stands the Gardoš Tower, also called the Millennium Tower, built in 1896 to mark a thousand years of Hungarian settlement in the plain; thirty-six metres tall, it now serves as a gallery and viewpoint over the Danube. Below runs the lively Zemun quay, lined with fish restaurants and moored boats, one of the most pleasant riverside walks in the whole city.
Did you know? Zemun was a separate town until it was absorbed into Belgrade in 1934; once the Austro-Hungarian frontier post facing Ottoman Belgrade across the Sava, it still feels like a distinct Central-European old town.
