About Wettsteinbrücke (Wettstein Bridge)
Basel's most photographed bridge, offering the finest view of the city skyline with the Münster and old town, the essential Basel panorama.
The Wettsteinbrücke, Wettstein Bridge, is the most photographed bridge in Basel and the location from which the definitive panoramic view of Basel is obtained. From the middle of this bridge, looking south-west toward Grossbasel (the old town), the view encompasses the entirety of Basel's historic skyline: the Rhine in the foreground, the old town of Grossbasel rising from the river bank, the Münster on its promontory dominating the skyline, and the historic buildings of the old town cascading down to the Rhine bank. This is the view that appears on postcards, in architectural histories, and in every serious photography of Basel, the complete visual summation of the city. The bridge itself was built in 1879 and reconstructed in 1939, and while it is not the oldest bridge in Basel, it occupies the most historically significant crossing point, roughly corresponding to the location of the medieval bridge that was for centuries the only Rhine crossing at Basel. The bridge connects the Kleinbasel and Grossbasel banks, with the Rheingasse and the Kleinbasel waterfront district on the north bank and the historic old town on the south. An evening walk across the Wettsteinbrücke, with the floodlit Münster reflected in the Rhine and the lights of the old town buildings, is one of the most beautiful urban experiences Basel offers.
Did you know? The view from the Wettsteinbrücke, Münster towering over the old town above the Rhine, is the definitive Basel panorama, reproduced on postcards and in photographic histories of the city for over a century.
