The Pinacoteca Corrado Giaquinto, housed in the Palazzo della Provincia in central Bari, is the principal art museum of Puglia and one of the most important collections of southern Italian art. Named in honour of Corrado Giaquinto (1703–1766), the great Pugliese painter who worked at the courts of Turin, Madrid, and Naples, the gallery holds over 600 works spanning a remarkable chronological range. The collection includes Byzantine panel paintings, medieval sculpture, altarpieces by the painters of the Neapolitan school, and significant works by Giaquinto himself, a master of luminous, spirited Rococo painting whose work influenced Francisco Goya among others. The gallery also holds an important collection of Pugliese decorative arts, furniture, and archaeological material from the region.
