About Castel del Monte
Frederick II's perfectly octagonal UNESCO World Heritage castle from 1240, whose mathematical precision and mysterious symbolism have fascinated scholars for eight centuries.
Castel del Monte stands alone on a hill in the Murge plateau, about 65 kilometres west of Bari, and is one of the most extraordinary architectural achievements of the medieval world. Built by Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen around 1240, it is a perfectly regular octagonal building with eight octagonal towers at its corners, the number eight representing perfection and the transition between earth and heaven in medieval numerology. The interior is arranged in eight trapezoid rooms on each of two storeys, with the rooms positioned to capture specific angles of sunlight at the equinoxes and solstices. No one fully understands what the castle was built for, there is no evidence it was ever militarily garrisoned or used as a royal residence for any extended period. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Did you know? Castel del Monte's silhouette appears on the Italian 1-cent euro coin, recognition of its status as one of Italy's most iconic architectural monuments.
