About Sant Cugat del Vallès Monastery
A magnificent Benedictine monastery 20 km northwest of Barcelona, founded in the 9th century on the site of a Roman fort and the tomb of the martyr Saint Cucuphas, featuring one of the finest Romanesque cloisters in Catalonia with 144 intricately carved capitals.
The Monastery of Sant Cugat is one of Catalonia's most important medieval monuments, a Benedictine monastery founded in the 9th century on the site of a Roman fort near Barcelona, which grew to become one of the wealthiest and most influential monasteries in the region during the Middle Ages. The church is a masterpiece of Catalan Romanesque architecture, with a beautiful façade and interior. The outstanding feature is the cloister, a 12th-century masterpiece of Romanesque carving with 144 columns, each pair surmounted by a uniquely decorated capital. The monastery is easily reached from Barcelona by FGC commuter train.
