About Thessaloniki

Welcome to Thessaloniki, the second city of Greece and the capital of the north, strung along the curve of the Thermaic Gulf beneath its old walls. It is a city of layers, where Roman emperors, Byzantine saints, Ottoman sultans and a great Jewish community have each left their mark, and where ancient monuments stand casually among cafés and busy modern streets.

It was founded in 315 BC by King Cassander of Macedon, who named it for his wife Thessalonike, a half-sister of Alexander the Great. As a Roman city it grew rich on the Via Egnatia, the great road east, and became the capital of the emperor Galerius, who left it a triumphal arch and the mighty Rotunda. Then, for a thousand years, it was the second city of the Byzantine Empire, filling with churches whose mosaics still glow, now protected together by UNESCO.

In 1430 the Ottomans took the city, and for nearly five centuries Thessaloniki was a place where mosques, churches and synagogues stood side by side. After Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492, so many Sephardic Jews settled here that for centuries they formed much of the city, and Thessaloniki became one of the foremost Jewish cities in the world.

The modern city was forged by catastrophe. In 1917 a great fire destroyed much of the old town, and it was rebuilt on a grand European plan, with the broad sweep of Aristotelous Square opening to the sea. The twentieth century also brought terrible loss: under German occupation almost the entire Jewish community, around fifty thousand people, was deported and murdered in the Holocaust.

Out of all this comes the city you walk today. The White Tower stands guard on the waterfront; Roman ruins and Byzantine churches thread the centre; the old upper town climbs to its walls and its hilltop fortress; and a new seafront promenade runs south toward the sunset. Thessaloniki is also young and lively, a university city famous for its food, its music and its easy pleasure in life.

Give it time, and walk it slowly, from the sea up to the walls and back. In an afternoon you can pass through Roman, Christian, Ottoman and Jewish Thessaloniki and still have time for a long dinner in Ladadika. Few cities hold so much history so lightly. Welcome to Thessaloniki. Let us begin.

Did you know?

Three things most visitors miss

White Tower

The White Tower was built by the Ottomans after Sultan Murad II took Thessaloniki in 1430, and once anchored the eastern end of the city's sea walls, long since demolished.

Rotunda of Galerius

The Rotunda was raised around 306 AD for the emperor Galerius, probably as his mausoleum, though he was buried elsewhere; its walls are more than six metres thick, which has helped it survive earthquakes.

Arch of Galerius (Kamara)

The Arch of Galerius was built around 298 to 303 AD to celebrate the emperor's victories over the Sassanid Persians, and straddled the Via Egnatia, the great Roman road through the city.
