About Quinta da Regaleira
A mysterious neo-Manueline palace and gardens filled with esoteric symbolism, wells, grottos, tunnels, and towers designed around Masonic, Rosicrucian, and Templar themes by the eccentric millionaire António Monteiro in the early 20th century.
Quinta da Regaleira is Sintra's most mysterious and romantically charged estate, a late 19th and early 20th-century creation of staggering originality that combines a neo-Manueline palace, elaborate Romantic gardens, and a network of underground tunnels, wells, grottos, and symbolic structures charged with esoteric meaning. The property was purchased in 1892 by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a wealthy Brazilian-Portuguese eccentric known as 'Monteiro dos Milhões' (Monteiro of the Millions), who commissioned Italian architect Luigi Manini to design a palace and grounds expressing his deep interest in Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, Templar symbolism, Dante's Divine Comedy, and Portuguese mysticism. The most famous feature is the Initiation Well, an inverted tower descending nine stories below ground, its spiral staircase decorated with esoteric symbols, accessible through tunnels. The gardens are extraordinary: formal terraces, a Gothic-style chapel, a lake, grottos, fountains, and hidden paths create a landscape of theatrical mystery.
Did you know? The Initiation Well descends nine levels underground, the number nine appearing throughout Regaleira's symbolism, representing the nine circles of Dante's Inferno, the nine spheres of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, and the nine grades of Freemasonry.
