About Mercado de Abastos
The largest covered market in Galicia, built in 1941 on the site of the old Convent of Santo Agostiño, Mercado de Abastos is the best place to experience Galician gastronomy: fresh fish, octopus, shellfish, Galician cheeses, and local produce from the surrounding countryside.
The Mercado de Abastos (Provisions Market) of Santiago de Compostela is the largest covered market in Galicia and one of the most important in Spain. Built in 1941 on the site of the former Convent of Santo Agostiño, it occupies an entire city block and is divided into eight stone-roofed pavilions connected by an open square. The fish and seafood stalls are the reason most visitors come: Galicia has one of the richest fishing traditions in Europe, and the market's fish hall (pescadería) displays an extraordinary variety of Atlantic species, percebes (barnacles), nécoras (velvet crabs), centollos (spider crabs), vieiras (scallops), merluza (hake), and the ubiquitous pulpo (octopus), often still alive in tanks. The produce stalls sell turnip greens (grelos), potatoes, local peppers, and the distinctive Galician dried-meat products (chorizos, lacón). Several restaurants adjacent to the market serve food bought in the stalls, particularly the traditional pulpo á feira (octopus fair style, with paprika and olive oil).
Did you know? Galicia produces approximately 40% of all mussels consumed in Spain, an extraordinary figure for a region of 2.7 million people. The mussels are grown on bateas (floating wooden frames called rafts) moored in the Rías, particularly the Ría de Arousa, where the nutrient-rich upwelling waters allow mussels to grow in 12-18 months to a size and quality that takes 2-3 years to achieve in Atlantic conditions. The mejillón de Galicia has PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) status.
