About Colegio de Fonseca: University of Santiago
The Renaissance gem of Santiago's old town, the Colegio de Fonseca (1532), built by Archbishop Alonso de Fonseca as a student college, is considered the finest example of Plateresque Renaissance architecture in Galicia, with an exquisite arcaded courtyard now serving as the University Library.
The Colegio de Fonseca (formally the Colegio Mayor de Santiago Alfeo) was built in 1532 by Archbishop Alonso de Fonseca III as a secular college for students of the University of Santiago. The building is the masterpiece of Galician Plateresque architecture: a style of early Spanish Renaissance that takes the Gothic building tradition and applies Renaissance ornamental vocabulary to it, with richly carved stonework covering doorways, arcades, and cornices in a tapestry of heraldic motifs, grotesques, and classical ornament. The interior courtyard, one of the finest Renaissance courtyards in Spain, has two stories of arcades with polished granite columns, elaborately carved capitals, and a cloister walk. The building now serves as the central library of the University of Santiago de Compostela. The adjacent Chapel of Santiago Alfeo (1532) retains its original carved stone altarpiece and ceiling.
Did you know? Archbishop Alonso de Fonseca III (1475-1534) was one of the most powerful men in 16th-century Spain: simultaneously Archbishop of Santiago (1507-1523), Archbishop of Toledo (1523-1534, the highest ecclesiastical position in Spain), and a key adviser to both Ferdinand and Isabella and Charles I (Holy Roman Emperor Charles V). His personal income was enormous, and he used it to commission buildings, collect art, and patronise humanist scholars. He was also the patron of the Spanish poet Garcilaso de la Vega.
