About Piazza Cavour
Rimini's medieval civic heart, dominated by the 13th-century Palazzo dell'Arengo and the 14th-century Palazzo del Podestà, and graced by the 1543 bronze Fontana della Pigna.
Piazza Cavour is the true civic centre of medieval Rimini, and it retains more of its original historical character than any other space in the city. The square is dominated by two great medieval buildings: the Palazzo dell'Arengo, built in 1204, the oldest public building in the city, used for centuries as the seat of the communal government; and the Palazzo del Podestà, rebuilt in the 1330s, which served as the residence of Rimini's ruling magistrate.
At the centre of the square stands the Fontana della Pigna, a bronze pine cone fountain dating from 1543, one of the finest Renaissance fountain sculptures in the Adriatic region. The pine cone, an ancient symbol of abundance and immortality, was a common motif in Roman art; the Malatesta family used it as one of their heraldic symbols. A fish market and outdoor cinema were once held in this square, and it remains the gathering place of local life.
Did you know? The Palazzo dell'Arengo (1204) is the oldest surviving public building in Rimini and one of the earliest communal government buildings in northern Italy.
