About Tiberius Bridge

A five-arched Roman bridge over the Marecchia river, begun under Augustus and completed under Tiberius in 21 AD, still carrying daily traffic after two thousand years.

The Tiberius Bridge is one of the most complete and best-preserved Roman bridges in existence anywhere in the world. Construction began under Emperor Augustus around 14 AD, and the bridge was completed under his successor Tiberius in 21 AD, hence the name. Its five semi-circular arches span the Marecchia river with a total length of 62 metres, built from Istrian limestone blocks fitted together without mortar, relying purely on the precision of Roman stonecutting and the geometry of the arch.

What makes the bridge astonishing is not merely its antiquity but its continued function. After two thousand years, it still carries the weight of modern vehicles and pedestrians. Despite surviving floods, wars, and earthquakes, including the devastating WWII bombing of Rimini, the bridge has never required structural rebuilding. On the far side lies the Borgo San Giuliano neighbourhood, famous for its vivid murals depicting scenes from Fellini's films.

Did you know? The Tiberius Bridge has never been structurally rebuilt in two thousand years, it survived the devastating Allied bombing of Rimini in 1944 that destroyed most of the city.
