About Piazza Tre Martiri

The former Roman forum of ancient Ariminum, where Julius Caesar famously addressed his troops in 49 BC after crossing the Rubicon, today a lively central square with a medieval clock tower.

Piazza Tre Martiri stands on the site of the ancient Roman forum of Ariminum, the public heart of the city for centuries. Its most famous historical moment came in January 49 BC, when Julius Caesar crossed the nearby Rubicon river with his 13th Legion and marched into Rimini, an act of war against the Roman Senate. Caesar is said to have addressed his troops here in the forum, on the very ground beneath this square.

The square's name, Three Martyrs, commemorates three Italian partisans executed here by the Nazis on 16 August 1944, during one of the darkest periods of the city's history. Their memory is kept alive by a small monument. The medieval clock tower on one side of the square dates from the fifteenth century and was once part of the civic buildings complex. Today the square is a gathering point for locals and visitors alike, lined with cafés and shops, with the old cobblestones and towers providing a backdrop of remarkable historical depth.

Did you know? Julius Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon and his speech here in the Ariminum forum in 49 BC triggered the Roman Civil War that ended the Republic and led directly to the creation of the Roman Empire.
