About Museo della Città

Rimini's main civic museum, housed in a seventeenth-century former Jesuit monastery, containing outstanding Roman collections, medieval art, and paintings by Ghirlandaio and Giovanni Bellini.

The Museo della Città di Rimini is housed in the former Jesuit College and Church of the Holy Suffrage, a seventeenth-century complex of considerable architectural quality in the historic centre. The museum presents the full history of Rimini from prehistoric times through the Roman period, the medieval era, and the Renaissance.

The Roman section is particularly impressive, featuring exceptional mosaic floors and Roman statuary from the ancient city of Ariminum, including architectural fragments and inscriptions. The medieval and Renaissance galleries contain works of major importance: a polyptych altarpiece attributed to Giovanni Bellini, paintings by Domenico Ghirlandaio, and an important collection of Riminese Renaissance painting. The surgical instruments from the Domus del Chirurgo are also displayed here. The museum's collection of Sigismondo Malatesta–related material provides important context for understanding the Tempio Malatestiano and the brilliant, troubled Renaissance court that created it.

Did you know? The museum houses a remarkable 14th-century Riminese School of painting, a distinctive regional tradition of Gothic art that flourished in Rimini before the rise of the Florentine Renaissance.
