About Place des Vosges
Paris's oldest and most beautiful planned square, built by Henri IV in 1612, with arcaded mansions in the classic red-brick-and-stone style surrounding a garden where Victor Hugo once lived.
Place des Vosges is the most beautiful square in Paris and arguably the finest example of planned urban space in France. Built between 1605 and 1612 on the orders of Henri IV, it was originally named Place Royale and was the most fashionable address in 17th-century Paris, home to Richelieu, Madame de Sévigné, and other great figures. Its thirty-six mansions, nine on each side, in elegant red brick and cream stone with high pitched roofs form a perfectly harmonious architectural ensemble.
The arcaded ground floors house cafés, galleries, and boutiques. The central garden, with its fountains and linden trees, is one of the finest formal gardens in central Paris. At the south corner stands the Maison de Victor Hugo, the apartment where the great novelist lived from 1832 to 1848 and wrote much of "Les Misérables," now a free museum displaying his manuscripts, drawings, and personal possessions. The name "Vosges" was given in 1800 because the Vosges department was the first in France to pay its taxes to the new Republic.
