About Île Saint-Louis

A tranquil 17th-century island in the Seine, perfectly preserved with its uniform architecture, prestigious addresses, and the legendary Berthillon ice cream that draws queues along the quai.

The Île Saint-Louis is the most tranquil and aristocratic of Paris's islands, a perfectly preserved ensemble of 17th-century architecture that feels like a time capsule from the reign of Louis XIII. It came into existence through an early 17th-century land development scheme: previously two small islands and a swamp, it was consolidated and built up between 1614 and 1664 by developers Christophe Marie, Lugles Poulletier, and François Le Regrattier, who built the uniform stone mansions and quays that give the island its distinctive character.

Today the Île Saint-Louis remains a residential enclave of extraordinary prestige, home to some of the most expensive apartments in Paris, inherited by families who have lived here for generations. The single main street, Rue Saint-Louis en l'Île, runs the length of the island and is lined with restaurants, cheese shops, wine merchants, and boutiques. The quays on both sides offer some of the finest walks in Paris, with views of Notre-Dame and the Seine. The legendary Berthillon ice cream shop, established in 1954, draws queues around the block for its extraordinary fruit and cream sorbets.

Did you know? The Île Saint-Louis was built as a coherent 17th-century real-estate development, the entire island was constructed in one style between 1614 and 1664.
