About Musée Picasso Paris
The world's largest Picasso collection in a magnificent 17th-century Marais mansion, spanning 5,000 works through all his revolutionary periods from Blue to Cubist to late.
The Musée Picasso Paris is the largest Picasso museum in the world, housed in the magnificent Hôtel Salé, one of the finest 17th-century mansions in Le Marais. The collection of 5,000 works, paintings, sculptures, ceramics, drawings, prints, and engravings, traces Picasso's extraordinary trajectory from his early realist Blue Period works through Cubism, Neoclassicism, Surrealism, and his exuberant late paintings. It came to the French state in lieu of inheritance taxes after Picasso's death in 1973, his heirs paid their death duties in art rather than money.
The Hôtel Salé itself, built in 1659 for a salt tax collector (hence "salé", salty), is one of the most beautifully restored historic buildings in Paris. After extensive renovation, the museum reopened in 2014 with dramatically improved space and presentation. Among its highlights: the 1907 studies for "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon," the Cubist masterpieces, the paintings and sculptures of Dora Maar and Françoise Gilot, and the late, vibrantly coloured works of the 1960s and 1970s.
Did you know? The Musée Picasso collection came to France as inheritance taxes: Picasso's heirs paid their death duties in artworks rather than money after he died in 1973.
