About Le Marais
Paris's most historic medieval district, home to Place des Vosges, the Jewish quarter, gay Paris, designer boutiques and the finest concentration of 17th-century hôtels particuliers.
Le Marais, the Marsh, is the most historically dense and culturally layered neighbourhood in Paris, the only quartier that survived Haussmann's 19th-century renovation essentially intact, preserving an extraordinary concentration of medieval and Renaissance architecture. The name recalls the marshland drained by monks in the 12th century. For three centuries it was the most fashionable address in Paris, home to French royalty and aristocracy, and its magnificent 17th-century hôtels particuliers (private mansions) are the finest surviving examples of that era.
Today Le Marais encompasses remarkable diversity. It contains the Jewish quarter around Rue des Rosiers, a community established since the Middle Ages. It is home to the Paris LGBTQ+ neighbourhood, centred on Rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie. It houses several outstanding museums including the Musée Picasso, Musée Carnavalet (the Paris history museum), and the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature. Its café-lined streets are among the most pleasant in Paris for an afternoon walk.
Did you know? Le Marais was saved from Haussmann's 19th-century demolition simply because it was no longer fashionable enough to be worth demolishing, its neglect preserved it.
