About Passeig des Born

Palma's great tree-lined promenade, laid out on the buried bed of a stream that once flooded the city, and for centuries the stage for its parades, markets and evening strolls.

The Passeig des Born is a tree-lined pedestrian promenade in the heart of Palma, running between Placa de la Reina and the square of Joan Carles I, where Avinguda Jaume III and the way to the Rambla meet it. It lies on the old bed of the Torrent de la Riera, the stream that once crossed the city and, in the flood of 14 October 1403, drowned the lower town with the loss of thousands of lives. The stream was diverted outside the walls in works completed in the early 17th century, in 1613.

In the 16th century the open space hosted tournaments, parades and public ceremonies, and the boulevard took much of its present shape in a redesign of 1833, with tall plane trees along a central walk. The historic palace of Casal Solleric, now an exhibition space, stands on the promenade. Locals simply call it the Born, and it remains the city's favourite place to stroll, meet and watch the evening go by.

Did you know? The promenade sits on the buried bed of the Torrent de la Riera, a stream diverted out of the city after a catastrophic flood on 14 October 1403 drowned the lower town with the loss of thousands.
