About Palazzo Abatellis
A refined 15th-century Catalan-Gothic palace housing Sicily's greatest art museum, with Antonello da Messina's Annunciation and the monumental Triumph of Death fresco.
The Palazzo Abatellis, built in the late 15th century for the city's harbour master Francesco Abatellis, is one of the finest examples of Catalan-Gothic civil architecture in Sicily and now houses the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia, the island's most important art museum. The collection spans from medieval to 16th-century Sicilian and southern Italian art, but two works justify the visit alone. The first is the Trionfo della Morte, the Triumph of Death, an enormous 15th-century fresco detached from the walls of Palazzo Sclafani, showing Death as a skeletal horseman on a pale horse trampling the rich and powerful while the poor and humble are passed over. Its scale and visual power are extraordinary. The second masterwork is Antonello da Messina's Annunciation of 1474, a small, intimate panel painting of the Virgin at the moment of the Annunciation that is considered one of the greatest paintings of the Italian Renaissance.
Did you know? Antonello da Messina is credited with bringing Flemish oil painting technique to Italy; his Annunciation here shows a mastery of light and psychological depth unmatched in 15th-century Italian painting.
