About Otranto Beaches & Baia dei Turchi

The extraordinary Adriatic beaches north of Otranto, from the Baia dei Turchi (Bay of the Turks, where Ottoman forces landed in 1480) to the Alimini Lakes nature reserve, some of the finest coastal scenery in the Salento.

The coastline north of Otranto offers some of the most beautiful and varied beach scenery in the Salento, a succession of limestone cliffs, sandy coves, and protected lagoons stretching from the city to the Alimini Lakes natural reserve about 10 kilometres away. The most historically significant beach in the area is the Baia dei Turchi, the Bay of the Turks, the spot where the Ottoman fleet landed in 1480. Today it is one of the most beautiful natural beaches in the area, a long curve of fine sand backed by maritime pine forest, protected as part of a nature reserve and accessible only on foot. The Alimini Lakes, connected to the sea through a narrow channel, are one of the most important nature reserves on the Adriatic coast, with exceptional birdwatching opportunities.

Did you know? The Baia dei Turchi takes its name from the Ottoman landing of 1480, a rare case of an Italian beach named for a specific historical event, and a reminder that this quiet stretch of pines and clear water was the shore on which the siege of Otranto began.
