The most historically significant beach in the area is the Baia dei Turchi, the Bay of the Turks, the spot where the Ottoman fleet landed in 1480. Today it is one of the most beautiful natural beaches in the area, a long curve of fine sand backed by maritime pine forest, protected as part of a nature reserve and accessible only on foot. The Alimini Lakes, connected to the sea through a narrow channel, are one of the most important nature reserves on the Adriatic coast, with exceptional birdwatching opportunities.
