The Piazza della Libertà, the main public square of Ostuni, is the civic and social heart of the White City, and it is one of the most attractive urban spaces in Puglia. The piazza is enclosed on three sides by the Cathedral and the Episcopal Palace, the Palazzo Tanzarella (now the Town Hall), and a row of baroque and neoclassical palaces. On the fourth side, the square opens to a balcony view over the lower town and the surrounding countryside. The Episcopal Palace, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, is one of the finest examples of Renaissance and early baroque architecture in the Ostuni area. The square hosts the main public events of the town, festivals, markets, and the daily passeggiata, and the combination of the architectural setting and the views makes it one of the most pleasant places to sit and watch the world go by in the whole of southern Italy.
