About National Theatre

The temple-fronted home of the Bavarian State Opera, twice burned and twice rebuilt, the stage where Wagner's Tristan and the first two Ring operas were heard for the very first time.

The National Theatre (Nationaltheater) on Max-Joseph-Platz is the home of the Bavarian State Opera. Commissioned by King Maximilian I Joseph and designed by Karl von Fischer in a classical style modelled on the Odéon in Paris, it opened in 1818. A fire destroyed it in 1823; it was rebuilt by 1825, when the columned portico was added. Gutted again by bombing in 1943, it was reconstructed true to the original between 1958 and 1963. Its stage, at around 2,500 square metres, is among the largest in Europe, and the auditorium seats about 2,100. The house is famous above all for a series of Wagner world premieres under the patronage of King Ludwig II: Tristan und Isolde in 1865, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in 1868, and the first two operas of the Ring cycle, Das Rheingold in 1869 and Die Walküre in 1870. It remains one of the world's leading opera houses.

Did you know? King Maximilian's architect modelled the theatre on the Odéon in Paris, so Munich's grandest opera house began life as a deliberate copy of a French one.
