About Paseo del Prado & Art Triangle

Madrid's grand museum boulevard, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape (2021) connecting the Prado, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen museums, lined with fountains, gardens, and Belle Époque buildings.

The Paseo del Prado is one of the most celebrated urban promenades in Europe, a 1.5-kilometre boulevard lined with trees, fountains, and some of Spain's most important cultural institutions. Laid out in the 18th century by King Charles III as a promenade for the citizens of Madrid, it connected the royal gardens of the Retiro with the botanical garden and the royal palace. Today the Paseo forms the spine of Madrid's cultural district, flanked by the Prado Museum, the Caixa Forum cultural centre, the Royal Botanical Garden, the Naval Museum, and ending at the Reina Sofía. The famous Cibeles and Neptune fountains punctuate the boulevard. The three great art museums, the Prado, the Reina Sofía, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, are collectively known as the Golden Triangle of Art. In 2021, the Paseo del Prado and Retiro Park were jointly inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Did you know? In 2021, the Paseo del Prado and Retiro Park were jointly inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised as a pioneering example of combining art, science, and nature in an urban setting.
