About Madrid Río

A spectacular 6-kilometre riverside park created by burying the M-30 ring road in 2011, transforming the banks of the Manzanares into Madrid's most modern green space, with cycle paths, beaches, and the Puente de Toledo.

Madrid Río is one of the most ambitious urban regeneration projects in 21st-century Europe, a 6.4-kilometre linear park that was created along the banks of the Manzanares River after the M-30 motorway was buried underground in a project completed in 2011. The park runs from the Royal Palace area in the north to the Casa de Campo park in the south, and includes beach areas (with water features), outdoor gyms, playgrounds, skate parks, cycle paths, and numerous architectural interventions including the striking Arganzuela Bridge, a series of footbridges by Dominique Perrault, and reconstructed historic features. The park provides the city with direct access to the river for the first time in decades, and has become enormously popular with Madrid residents for walking, cycling, swimming, and relaxing.

Did you know? The M-30 motorway buried underground to create Madrid Río cost over 1 billion euros, one of the most expensive urban regeneration projects in Spain's history.
