About Museum of the History of Madrid
A charming baroque former hospice housing a fascinating collection tracing Madrid's history through maps, prints, paintings, and an extraordinary 1830 scale model of the entire city.
The Museo de Historia de Madrid, the Museum of the History of Madrid, occupies an extraordinarily beautiful baroque building in the Malasaña neighbourhood that began life as the Hospicio de San Fernando, a charitable institution for the poor founded in the 18th century. The building's baroque portal, designed by Pedro de Ribera and considered one of the most elaborate baroque doorways in Spain, is itself a monument worth seeking out. The museum traces the history of Madrid from its origins as a small settlement through its selection as the capital of the Spanish empire in 1561, its transformation into the great Habsburg and Bourbon court city, its 19th-century modernisation, and its 20th-century upheavals. The collection includes an extraordinary array of maps, prints, paintings, models, and objects relating to the city's history. The single most remarkable object in the museum is the Maqueta de León Gil de Palacio, a magnificent detailed scale model of Madrid as it appeared in 1830, approximately 3.5 metres by 2.5 metres, showing every building, street, and garden in the city at that time. It is one of the most extraordinary historical documents of any European city.
Did you know? The 1830 Gil de Palacio scale model in the museum shows every building in Madrid at that time, it reveals that a large share of the city's area was occupied by religious institutions: churches, convents, monasteries, and their gardens.
