About Salamanca District
Madrid's most elegant and affluent neighbourhood, a 19th-century grid of wide boulevards home to luxury fashion on Serrano Street, embassies, the Thyssen and Sorolla museums, and Madrid's finest restaurants.
The Barrio de Salamanca is Madrid's most prestigious residential neighbourhood, developed in the mid-to-late 19th century as a planned extension of the city for the prosperous bourgeoisie. Designed by the Marquis of Salamanca, after whom it is named, on a rational grid of wide, tree-lined boulevards, the neighbourhood is characterised by handsome late 19th and early 20th-century apartment buildings in a Bourbon classicist style. The Calle de Serrano is its main commercial artery and Madrid's luxury shopping destination, lined with the flagship stores of Prada, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Chanel, and the top Spanish fashion brands. The neighbourhood is also home to numerous foreign embassies, the Sorolla Museum, the Lázaro Galdiano Museum, and many of Madrid's finest restaurants. The streets are immaculately maintained, the residents stylishly dressed, and the restaurants among the most expensive in the city.
Did you know? The neighbourhood was developed by the Marquis of Salamanca, one of 19th-century Spain's most flamboyant speculators, who repeatedly made and lost enormous fortunes.
