St Pierre Cathedral stands atop the highest point of Geneva's old town, its distinctive towers visible from across the city and the lake. Construction began in the 12th century and continued through the 13th and 14th centuries, resulting in a building that combines Romanesque foundations with a predominantly Gothic structure, and an incongruous 18th-century neoclassical portico added to the western façade. The cathedral achieved lasting historical significance in 1536 when the Protestant reformer John Calvin arrived in Geneva and made St Pierre his pulpit until his death in 1564. Calvin's plain wooden chair, the actual seat from which he delivered his sermons, is preserved inside the cathedral, along with the austere interior that reflects the Reformed theological suspicion of decorative excess. The two towers, accessible via 157 steps, offer panoramic views over Geneva, the lake, and the Alps. Below the cathedral, a remarkable archaeological site discovered in the 20th century reveals five successive layers of religious buildings extending back to Roman times, including 4th-century Christian structures, all preserved in a remarkable underground museum.
