About Funchal

Welcome to Funchal, the capital of Madeira, a Portuguese island far out in the Atlantic, nearly a thousand kilometres from the mainland and closer to Africa than to Lisbon. The city rises in a great amphitheatre of white, red-roofed houses from its harbour up the green mountainsides, sheltered and warm the year round. With its gardens, its old wine lodges and its mild subtropical air, Funchal has drawn travellers in search of a gentle climate for well over a century.

The island was uninhabited forest when Portuguese captains under Zarco claimed it in 1419, and settlers arrived soon after, naming the place Funchal for the wild fennel, funcho, that grew there. The town was raised to a city in 1508 by King Manuel I, and grew rich first on sugar and then, from the 1700s, on its famous fortified wine, Madeira, as its harbour became a regular port of call for ships crossing the oceans.

The heart of the visit is compact and walkable. In the centre stand the old cathedral and the lively Mercado dos Lavradores, the farmers' market; along the shore lies the Zona Velha, the old town, where the doors are painted and the restaurants fill at night, beside the bright yellow Fortaleza de São Tiago. From the marina a bronze Cristiano Ronaldo, Funchal's most famous son, guards his own museum.

Then there is the mountain. A cable car lifts you from the old town up to Monte, high above the city, where you can wander the enchanting Monte Palace tropical garden, visit the pilgrimage church that holds the tomb of the last Austro-Hungarian emperor, and then ride back down in a wicker toboggan steered by men in straw hats. Madeira's love of gardens shows again in the terraced Botanical Garden on its own hillside.

Beyond the city, the island beckons. The great laurel forest of Madeira, the laurisilva, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, cloaks the interior, threaded by the levadas, the old irrigation channels that now make some of the finest walking trails in Europe; to the west, the sea cliff of Cabo Girão offers a glass-floored view straight down to the Atlantic. Funchal is the leading cruise port of Portugal, and famous for a New Year fireworks display that lights up the whole bay. Come for the climate, stay for the gardens, the wine and the warm Atlantic light.

Did you know?

Three things most visitors miss

Funchal Cathedral (Sé)

The cathedral was begun in the late 1400s and was already in use by 1508, the year Funchal became a city; it is one of the very few buildings to survive almost unchanged from Madeira's early colonisation.

Mercado dos Lavradores

The market opened in November 1940, designed by Edmundo Tavares in the Estado Novo style, and is decorated with azulejo tile panels painted by João Rodrigues.

Zona Velha (Old Town)

The Zona Velha is where Funchal was first settled in the 1400s; the little 15th-century Capela do Corpo Santo, the fishermen's chapel, is one of the few buildings to survive from that age.
