About Patio de los Naranjos

The ancient orange tree courtyard of the Mezquita, a formal garden of 98 orange trees planted in rows corresponding to the prayer hall's columns, occupying the site of the original ablutions court of the Great Mosque, accessible without a mosque ticket.

The Patio de los Naranjos is the large colonnaded courtyard of the Mezquita, the space that functioned as the ablutions court of the Great Mosque during the Caliphate period. The courtyard is planted with 98 orange trees, whose rows correspond precisely to the rows of columns inside the prayer hall, creating a sense of continuous space between interior and exterior. Three ancient fountains occupy the central axis of the courtyard. The patio is accessible without a mosque ticket, entrance is through the Puerta del Perdón (Gate of Forgiveness) on the north wall, and it is one of the most pleasant spaces in Córdoba, particularly in spring when the orange blossom scents the air.

Did you know? The orange trees in the Patio de los Naranjos are Seville (bitter) oranges, the same variety used for marmalade, not the sweet eating oranges. They were introduced to Córdoba by the Moors from North Africa, where they are native. The bitter orange was valued for its essential oil, used in perfumery, and for the beauty of its blossom, rather than as an edible fruit.
