The crowning jewel of the Mezquita, a small domed antechamber whose walls are encrusted with Byzantine mosaics made from gold, silver, and coloured glass tesserae, sent by the Emperor of Constantinople to glorify the furthest reach of the Islamic world.
The Mihrab of the Mezquita is the prayer niche in the south wall of the mosque indicating the direction of Mecca, the holiest space in the building and one of the most beautiful objects in Islamic art. It was built in the 960s during the reign of Al-Hakam II, and its walls and the antechamber (the Maksura) before it are covered in Byzantine mosaics of extraordinary quality: gold and silver tesserae set in curving vegetal and geometric patterns, with Koranic inscriptions, created by craftsmen sent from Constantinople by the Emperor Nikephoros II Phokas. The golden, shimmering quality of the mosaic work in the sunlight that enters from the high windows is unforgettable.
