About Capilla de San Bartolomé
A small 15th-century chapel in the historic centre of Córdoba whose interior is entirely covered in Mudéjar stucco and tile work of extraordinary quality, one of the finest examples of this hybrid Christian-Islamic decorative art in Andalusia.
The Capilla de San Bartolomé is a small 15th-century Gothic chapel in the historic centre of Córdoba whose interior is entirely covered with Mudéjar stucco and tile decoration, a riot of Islamic geometric pattern and vegetal ornament applied to the walls, arches, and vaulting of a Christian chapel. The chapel is attached to the Universidad de Córdoba and is open to visitors. It represents the highest expression of the Mudéjar style in Córdoba: a style in which Christian patrons commissioned Islamic craftsmen (and Christian craftsmen trained in Islamic techniques) to decorate their buildings in a hybrid aesthetic that blended the two traditions.
Did you know? The Mudéjar style, Islamic decoration applied to Christian buildings, was not unique to Córdoba but was widespread across medieval Spain in the regions reconquered from the Moors. It reflects the practical reality that the skilled craftsmen who knew how to produce high-quality decorative work were predominantly Muslim, and Christian patrons who wanted beautiful buildings had to hire them regardless of religious difference.
