About Cristo de los Faroles
A haunting 18th-century square containing Córdoba's most beloved religious image, a figure of Christ on the Cross surrounded by eight iron lanterns, set in a perfectly proportioned enclosed space in the heart of the old city.
The Plaza del Cristo de los Faroles is a small, enclosed square in the historic centre of Córdoba, containing the most venerated religious image in the city: a stone figure of Christ on the Cross carved in 1794 by the sculptor Juan Navarro León, set on a tall plinth and surrounded by eight tall iron lanterns that burn throughout the night. The square is surrounded on three sides by the walls of the Convent of the Capuchins and on the fourth side by a simple iron railing that allows viewing from the street. The combination of the whitewashed convent walls, the cross, the lanterns, and the intimate enclosure creates one of the most atmospheric spaces in Córdoba. The square is particularly beautiful at night, when the lanterns cast warm light on the white walls.
Did you know? The monument of the Cristo de los Faroles was created in 1794 at the initiative of the Capuchin friar Fray Diego José de Cádiz, who promoted it as an act of public devotion. It was carved by the sculptor Juan Navarro León and financed by the Marquises of Ariza and other donors, and from the outset its eight surrounding iron lanterns gave it the popular name by which it is universally known.
