About Villa del Balbianello

Perched on a wooded promontory above Lenno on the western shore, Villa del Balbianello is the most photographed villa on Lake Como, an 18th-century masterpiece of terraced gardens, loggias, and lake views that served as a location for both Casino Royale and Star Wars.

Villa del Balbianello is perhaps the most dramatically situated and most celebrated of all the grand villas on Lake Como, standing on a narrow, heavily wooded promontory that juts into the lake near the village of Lenno on the western shore. The villa was built in the late 18th century for Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini on the foundations of an earlier Franciscan chapel, and expanded and refined by subsequent owners including the explorer Guido Monzino, who donated the entire estate to the national heritage organisation FAI in 1988. The villa is now managed by FAI and is open to the public seasonally. Its terraced gardens, cascading in formal tiers from the villa to the lakeside, are among the most beautiful in Italy, planted with ancient trees, sculptural topiaries, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking both arms of the lake simultaneously. The villa's loggia, a covered outdoor terrace, offers one of the iconic views of Lake Como and has been used as a filming location for the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale and the 2002 Star Wars film Attack of the Clones.

Did you know? Villa del Balbianello was used as a filming location for two globally famous films: the James Bond film Casino Royale (2006) used the loggia for Bond's recuperation scenes, and Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (2002) used the garden terraces for Anakin and Padmé's courtship scenes.
