About Roman Cologne and the Roman-Germanic Museum

Cologne was founded by the Romans in AD 50 as Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium; its name still echoes "Colonia," and its Roman treasures fill the Roman-Germanic Museum.

The very name "Cologne" comes from the Latin Colonia, for this was one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire north of the Alps. It was founded as a colonia in AD 50 at the request of Agrippina the Younger, wife of the Emperor Claudius, who had been born here; the city's full name was Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. It became the capital of the Roman province of Germania Inferior and a thriving city of perhaps 40,000 people, with walls, gates, temples, a governor's palace, and a glass industry. Reminders are everywhere: a surviving stretch of Roman wall, the Roman tower, and the ruins of the Praetorium (the governor's palace) beneath the city hall. The Roman-Germanic Museum, beside the cathedral, was built in 1974 directly over the spectacular Dionysus Mosaic, a vast Roman floor mosaic discovered in situ, and holds one of the world's finest collections of Roman everyday life, glass, and inscriptions.

Did you know? The name "Cologne" comes from the Latin Colonia: the city was founded in AD 50 and named Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium after the empress Agrippina the Younger, who was born here.
