About Castello Svevo di Bari

The imposing Norman-Hohenstaufen castle rebuilt by Frederick II, housing a unique collection of plaster casts of Pugliese architectural masterpieces.

The Castello Svevo di Bari stands on a promontory overlooking the sea at the edge of the old city, a formidable structure whose history spans nearly a thousand years. Originally built by the Normans in the twelfth century, it was substantially rebuilt and enlarged by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II around 1233, the same brilliant and controversial monarch who transformed architecture across southern Italy and Sicily. The castle was later modified by Isabella of Aragon and underwent further changes under Spanish rule. Today it serves as a museum and cultural centre, most notably housing the remarkable gipsoteca, a collection of plaster casts reproducing architectural details and sculptures from the great Norman-Romanesque churches of Puglia, allowing visitors to study in close detail the carvings that are otherwise high above eye level in the region's great cathedrals.

Did you know? Frederick II, who rebuilt this castle around 1233, was so fascinated by falconry that he wrote a 600-page scientific treatise on the subject, one of the earliest works of European natural science.
