About The Glenlivet Distillery

The first legally licensed distillery in the Highlands, producing one of the world's most popular single malts since 1824.

The Glenlivet holds a unique place in whisky history as the first distillery in the Scottish Highlands to take out a legal licence under the Excise Act of 1823. Founded by George Smith, a farmer and illicit distiller who saw the opportunity in going legitimate, the distillery faced considerable hostility from neighbouring illegal distillers. Smith reportedly carried two pistols for protection. Today The Glenlivet is one of the best-selling single malts in the world.
