About Teatro Greco

The ancient Greek theatre of Taormina, built in the 3rd century BC with the most breathtaking setting of any ancient theatre, Etna to the southwest, the Ionian Sea to the east.

The Teatro Greco of Taormina is among the most beautifully situated ancient theatres in the world. Built by the Greek colonists of Tauromenion in the 3rd century BC on a natural hollow in the hillside overlooking the Ionian Sea, it was later substantially modified by the Romans, who added the scaena frons (the elaborate stone stage wall) and converted the orchestra for gladiatorial combats. The theatre could seat approximately 10,000 spectators. Its enduring fame rests not primarily on its size or architectural detail, though the Roman scaena frons with its niches and columns is impressive, but on its setting: through the columns of the ruined stage wall, the view encompasses the blue Ionian stretching south toward Syracuse, the coastline curving toward Reggio Calabria, and behind everything, Etna, the active volcano, rising to its summit. This conjunction of ancient theatre, sea, and living volcano is unique in the world.

Did you know? Goethe wrote in his Italian Journey (1787) that the view from the Teatro Greco was the greatest sight he had ever seen, a claim that millions of visitors have endorsed in the 235 years since.
