About Corso Umberto I
Taormina's main medieval street, a charming promenade of Baroque palaces, boutiques, and cafes running the length of the hilltop town with views of Etna and the sea at every turn.
Corso Umberto I is the main street of Taormina, running east to west through the historic centre along the ridge of the hill, flanked by Baroque palaces, medieval towers, churches, and the sophisticated boutiques and cafes that have made Taormina one of the most fashionable resort towns in Sicily since the 19th century. The street connects the two main city gates, Porta Catania to the southwest and Porta Messina to the northeast, and its length of about 700 metres passes through Piazza IX Aprile, the town's main terrace piazza with its extraordinary views. The corso is closed to traffic and is the quintessential promenade space: in the evening it fills with the passeggiata of locals and the promenade of international tourists, a combination that has characterised Taormina since Goethe and other Grand Tour travellers made it famous.
Did you know? Taormina became famous across Europe after Goethe's description in his Italian Journey (1787), within decades it was receiving aristocratic and artistic tourists from across the continent.
