About Taormina Cathedral
A handsome medieval cathedral from the 13th century, with a Norman-inspired facade of pink stone and a graceful Baroque fountain in front featuring the town's centaur symbol.
The Cathedral of San Nicolò di Bari (commonly called the Duomo di Taormina) is a compact but beautifully proportioned medieval church built in the 13th century in the Norman-Sicilian style, its austere facade of warm pink sandstone a characteristic product of the local stone. The interior is three-aisled with a Gothic nave and contains some good Renaissance art, including a polyptych altarpiece by Antonello de Saliba (a follower of Antonello da Messina). In front of the cathedral, the 17th-century Baroque Fontana del Centauro features the centaur with the globe, the symbol of Taormina, standing on a basin of carved stone. The combination of the severe medieval facade and the playful Baroque fountain creates one of the most characteristic scenes in Taormina.
Did you know? The centaur, half human, half horse, is the symbol of Taormina, an unusual survival of classical mythology as a town emblem in a Christian context.
