About Parc de l'Orangerie

Strasbourg's largest and most elegant park, home to nesting white storks, the symbol of Alsace, just beside the European institutions quarter.

The Parc de l'Orangerie, whose origins go back to a grand avenue of lime trees laid out in 1692 and which was redesigned as an English-style landscape park in the 19th century, is the oldest and most elegant park in Strasbourg. Covering 26 hectares in the European Quarter beside the Parliament, it features a lake with rowing boats, a 19th-century orangery (now an exhibition space), an outdoor stage, a miniature zoo, and several historic pavilions including the Josephine Pavilion. But its most celebrated residents are the white storks that nest here. The white stork is the symbol of Alsace, and Strasbourg has been central to efforts to restore the population: stork colonies were nearly wiped out in Alsace by the 1960s due to habitat loss and hunting on migration routes in Africa. Thanks to conservation efforts and a stork-breeding programme at the Orangerie, the population has recovered dramatically, and the storks' nests atop old chimneys and purpose-built platforms are now a beloved feature of the Alsatian landscape.

Did you know? White storks were nearly extinct in Alsace by the 1960s, fewer than ten nesting pairs remained. Conservation efforts centred on the Orangerie helped restore the population to over 400 pairs today.
